Armour of God 5 (Use Your Sword)

By Pastor Juliana T Akinbami

BREAKING THE POWER OF STRONGHOLDS BY THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT.

As Christians, we are called to be warriors in the spiritual realm. Our battles are not against flesh and blood but against the spiritual forces of darkness. To fight these battles, we need to arm ourselves with the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

The Sword of the Spirit is the most powerful weapon in our arsenal. It is not a physical sword but a spiritual one. When we wield the Sword of the Spirit, we are tapping into the very power of God. It is through the Word of God that we can defeat the enemy and overcome the trials and tribulations of life.

To use the sword as an effective weapon, the Word of God must be living and active in our minds. It must be alive. It means we are actively reading and meditating on the word. When it is alive in us, we can engage the Word in warfare, and it will not return empty.

The Sword of the Spirit is a weapon of offense and defense. It is a weapon that we can use to attack the enemy and to defend ourselves from his attacks. When we are under attack, we can use the Word of God to stand firm and resist the enemy. We can declare the promises of God and the truth of His Word, and the enemy will have to flee.

One of the most common tactics used by the enemy is the establishment of strongholds.
Strongholds are areas of our lives where the enemy has gained a foothold, and they can be incredibly difficult to break free from. These strongholds can take many forms, such as addiction, fear, or bitterness, and they can have a profound impact on our spiritual live.

Breaking free from strongholds requires a deep understanding of the power of the Word of God. It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that we can demolish these strongholds and take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

Common strongholds and obstacles that we face:
1. Personal strongholds
2. Genrrational strongholds
3. Demonic strongholds

1. PERSONAL STRONGHOLDS
A personal stronghold is a mindset or belief system that has a strong hold on a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It can be a pattern of thinking or behaviour that is deeply ingrained and difficult to break free from. Personal strongholds can develop as a result of past experiences, traumas, or learned behaviours, and they can often be rooted in fear, insecurity, or other negative emotions.

Examples of personal strongholds might include a persistent feeling of unworthiness or shame, a tendency to isolate oneself from others, or a pattern of self-destructive behaviours such as addiction or self-harm. Others include Fear, Unforgiveness, Pride, Lust, Doubt,  and Busyness.
These strongholds can have a significant impact on a person’s mental health, relationships, and overall well-being.

Breaking free from a personal stronghold often requires a combination of self-reflection, prayer, and intentional action.

Prayer to break personal strongholds

Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus, and I ask for your help in overcoming the strongholds in my life. I recognize that these strongholds have created barriers between us and hindered my relationship with you.

Lord, I confess that I have allowed fear, pride, unforgiveness, lust, addiction, doubt, and busyness to create strongholds in my heart and mind. I repent from these sins, and I ask for your forgiveness. I ask that you would cleanse me from all unrighteousness and create in me a clean heart (Psalm 51:10).

I ask that you would reveal to me any hidden strongholds that I may not be aware of. Help me to identify any thought patterns, attitudes, or behaviours that are not in line with your will. Give me the strength and courage to face these strongholds and overcome them by the power of your Spirit.

I declare that I am more than a conqueror through Christ who loved me (Romans 8:37). I declare that I am a new creation in Christ and that the old has passed away and the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). I declare that I am free in Christ and that nothing can separate me from your love (Romans 8:38-39).

I ask for your help in renewing my mind and transforming me from the inside out (Romans 12:2). I ask that you would help me to focus on your truth and promises, and to meditate on your Word day and night (Joshua 1:8).

I pray that you would fill me with your Holy Spirit and empower me to resist the devil and his schemes. I put on the full armour of God, as described in Ephesians 6:10-18, and I stand firm in the truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God.

Holy Spirit, empower me to walk in victory over the enemy. I pray that your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control will flow through me and radiate from me as I live as a light in this world.

Thank you for your grace, love, and mercy. I ask that you would continue to guide me on my journey of overcoming strongholds and living a victorious life in Christ. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

2. GENERATIONAL STRONGHOLDS
Generational strongholds are patterns of behaviour, belief, and thought that are passed down from one generation to another. These strongholds can be deeply ingrained and may hinder our ability to live in freedom and victory. Some common generational strongholds that Christians may face in their daily lives include:

I. Addiction: Patterns of addiction to substances or behaviours can be passed down from one generation to another.

II. Fear and anxiety: Fear and anxiety can be passed down through generations and can manifest as a lack of trust in God and a tendency to worry.

III. Unforgiveness: Unforgiveness and bitterness can be passed down from one generation to another, leading to broken relationships and a lack of peace.

IV. Poverty mindset: A poverty mindset can be passed down through generations, leading to a lack of financial resources and a belief that it is impossible to prosper.

V. Pride and self-righteousness: A tendency toward pride and self-righteousness can be passed down through generations, leading to an inability to receive correction and a lack of humility.

VI. Sexual immorality: Patterns of sexual sin and immorality can be passed down through generations, leading to brokenness in relationships and a distorted view of sexuality.

VII. Rejection and abandonment: A pattern of rejection and abandonment can be passed down through generations, leading to a fear of intimacy and difficulty forming healthy relationships.

Prayers to break generational strongholds
Dear Heavenly Father, I come before you in the name of Jesus Christ, and I ask for your forgiveness for any generational sins or curses that have been passed down through my family line. I confess any sins that have been committed by my ancestors, and I ask that you break any curse that has been placed on my family line.
Lord Jesus, I thank you for your blood that was shed on the cross for my sins and those of my forefathers. I plead the blood of Jesus over my life and my family line, and I declare that every curse is broken by the power of your blood.
I declare that I am a new creation in Christ Jesus and that the power of the Holy Spirit resides in me. I renounce any agreement with the lies or deception of the enemy, and I declare that I am free from the sins of my forefathers.
I stand on the authority of your Word, which says in Ezekiel 18:20, “The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.”
I ask that you break every generational curse that has been passed down through my family line, and I declare that I am no longer bound by the sins of my forefathers. I pray for your healing and restoration in every area of my life and the lives of my family members.
I declare that I am a child of God and that I have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. I declare that I am more than a conqueror through him who loved me (Romans 8:37), and that nothing can separate me from your love (Romans 8:38-39).

Holy Spirit, I ask you to fill me with your power and your presence and to break every stronghold of darkness that is holding me and my family captive. I declare that I am free from every generational curse, and I receive the blessings that you have for my family and me.
Father, I ask you to restore everything that the enemy has stolen from my family and me and to renew our minds and hearts with your love and your truth. I declare that we are no longer bound by generational curses, but we are free to walk in the fullness of your grace and your mercy.

I thank you, Lord, for your faithfulness and your mercy, and I ask for your continued protection and guidance as I walk in freedom and victory in Jesus’ name. Amen.

3. DEMONIC STRONGHOLDS

In the spiritual realm, there are forces of darkness that seek to oppress and control God’s people. These forces can manifest in various ways, such as addiction, fear, anxiety, depression, anger, and other negative emotions. They are often referred to as demonic strongholds, and they can be very difficult to break free from. However, with the power of prayer and faith, it is possible to break these strongholds and experience true freedom in Christ.

The first step in breaking demonic strongholds is to recognize them. It is important to understand that these forces are not simply negative thoughts or emotions, but rather they are spiritual forces that seek to control and manipulate us. They often come from past traumas, generational curses, or unconfessed sins. Once we recognize them, we can begin to pray and ask God for help in breaking them.

One of the most powerful prayers for breaking demonic strongholds is the prayer of renunciation. This prayer involves renouncing any ties or agreements we may have made with the forces of darkness and declaring our allegiance to Christ. It is a powerful tool for breaking the chains of supernatural darkness and setting us free from the oppression of the enemy.

Another powerful prayer for breaking demonic strongholds is the prayer of deliverance. This prayer involves asking God to deliver us from any demonic forces that may be oppressing us. It is a powerful tool for breaking free from addiction, fear, anxiety, depression, and other negative emotions.

Prayer to destroy demonic strongholds
Dear Lord, I come before you in the name of Jesus Christ, and I ask you to break every demonic stronghold in my life. I confess any sin or disobedience that has given the enemy a foothold in my life, and I renounce any agreement with the enemy’s lies or deception.

I declare that I am a child of God, bought with the precious blood of Jesus Christ. I stand on the authority of your Word, which says in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments, and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”I command every demonic spirit to leave my life, my mind, my emotions, and my body in the name of Jesus Christ. I break every curse, hex, or spell that has been spoken over me, and I declare that no weapon formed against me shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17).

I put on the full armour of God, as described in Ephesians 6:10-18, and I declare that I am equipped to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. I take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and I declare its power to break every stronghold and bring every thought into obedience to Christ.

I thank you, Lord, for your victory over every demonic stronghold, and I declare that I am more than a conqueror through him who loved me (Romans 8:37). I ask for your continued protection and guidance as I walk in freedom and victory in Jesus’ name. Amen.
