The Irresistible Kingdom – Be Prepared

By Pastor Juliana T Akinbami

1. The Importance of Being Ready
The parable of the ten virgins teaches us that we must always be prepared for the unexpected. The foolish virgins were caught off guard by the delay of the Bridegroom, we must be ready for any delays or challenges that may come our way. We must be spiritually equipped, constantly seeking God’s guidance and wisdom and nurturing our relationship with Him.

Being ready also means being vigilant and discerning. The wise virgins had the foresight to bring extra oil, symbolizing their spiritual preparedness. Similarly, we must develop a strong foundation in our faith, immersing ourselves in prayer, studying the Scriptures, and surrounding ourselves with fellow believers who can encourage and support us on our spiritual journey.

Furthermore, the parable reminds us of the urgency of our faith. The Bridegroom’s arrival was sudden and unexpected, emphasizing the need for immediate action. We cannot afford to procrastinate or delay our spiritual growth, we cannot afford to let our faith wane because of delays. Each day presents an opportunity to draw closer to God and live according to His will. Each day is an opportunity to wake up with purpose in our hearts. Let us not waste these opportunities but instead seize them with zeal and determination.

Matthew 24:42-44 (NIV): “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Pray
Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that unexpected delays and challenges are a part of life. I declare my determination not to be caught off guard but to stand firm, anchored by Your grace.
I commit to being spiritually equipped, constantly seeking Your wisdom and guidance. Just as the wise virgins had extra oil, I strive to nurture a reserve of spiritual readiness within me. May my life shine with Your light, illuminating the lives of those around me.
I commit to establishing a firm foundation in my faith. Through prayer, studying Your Word, and connecting with fellow believers, I declare my intention to grow and encourage others along the way.
I declare my heart is prepared, my lamp is burning with the oil of faith, and my spirit is eager to welcome Your presence.
In the name of Jesus, my Saviour and Lord, I pray. Amen.

2. The Wise Virgins’ Preparedness

The parable emphasizes the necessity of being prepared at all times. Just as the virgins carried extra oil for their lamps, we must constantly replenish our spiritual reserves through prayer, studying the Word, and cultivating a relationship with God. They were able to discern the signs of the Bridegroom’s arrival. Similarly, we need to be discerning of the times we live in and recognize the signs of Jesus’ imminent return.
The parable reminds us that endurance is crucial in our spiritual journey. The wise virgins waited patiently for the Bridegroom’s arrival, even in the face of delays. Similarly, we are called to persevere, remaining steadfast in our faith despite challenges and setbacks.
Ultimately, the parable highlights the grace of God’s invitation. The Bridegroom extended His invitation to all the virgins, but only the prepared ones were able to enter. This reminds us that God’s grace is available to all, but it is up to us to respond and prepare ourselves for His coming.
Likewise, in your daily life there are many opportunities that would be presented to you, only the prepared eye will see the opportunities as they are presented.

Hebrews 10:36-39 (NKJV): ” 35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise:
37 “For yet a little while,
And He who is coming will come and will not [m]tarry.
38 Now the just shall live by faith;
But if anyone draws back,
My soul has no pleasure in him.”

Pray
Lord, just as the virgins carried extra oil for their lamps, I understand the importance of constantly replenishing my spiritual reserves. Through prayer, immersing myself in Your Word, and nurturing a deep relationship with You, I declare my dedication to staying spiritually equipped at all times.
Just as the virgins recognized the imminent arrival of the Bridegroom, I pray for an attentive heart that can perceive the times I live in and understand the signs of the return of Christ.
I recognize the significance of endurance in my spiritual journey, therefore, I commit to waiting patiently for Your perfect timing, even in the face of delays and challenges. I declare that I will stand firm in my faith, remaining unwavering and steadfast through every trial.
I understand that it is up to me to respond and prepare myself for Your glorious coming. I hold onto Your Word in Hebrews 10:36-39, affirming that my perseverance in Your will, will lead to the fulfillment of Your promises. Your arrival will not be delayed, and I choose to live by faith, finding no pleasure in shrinking back. I declare that I belong to those who have faith and are saved.
Lord, open my eyes to see the opportunities You present in my daily life. May I be prepared to recognize and seize them, using them for Your glory and for the expansion of Your Kingdom on Earth.
In the name of Jesus, my Saviour and Redeemer, I pray.
Amen.

3. The Fear of Missing Out

Understanding the Fear of Missing Out

Matthew 6:33 (NKJV) – “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

In today’s fast-paced and hyperconnected world, the fear of missing out (FOMO) has become a pervasive and powerful force. It is essential to understand this phenomenon and its implications for our spiritual lives
FOMO is the anxiety or apprehension that one might be missing out on a rewarding experience, particularly when others are enjoying that experience. It is rooted in our innate desire to be included, to belong, and to partake in what others perceive as valuable or exciting. This fear can be a significant obstacle to our spiritual growth and can lead us astray from the path of righteousness.

The parable of the ten virgins teaches us several valuable lessons, one of which directly relates to FOMO. In the parable, ten virgins are waiting for the arrival of the Bridegroom. Five of them are wise, prepared with enough oil for their lamps, while the other five are foolish, lacking sufficient oil. When the Bridegroom arrives, the wise virgins enter the wedding feast with Him, while the foolish virgins are left outside.

The fear of missing out can cause us to make unwise choices, just like the foolish virgins. We may be tempted to attend events, browse social media for hours on end, take up more responsibility than we can possibly cope with, constant access to information bombarding our spaces every second triggers a response to check what is going on so that we do not miss out.

To overcome the fear of missing out, we must determine what really matters to us. We need to put first things first. Seek the Kingdom. Cultivate contentment and trust in God’s plan for our lives. We are reminded in scripture that God has a unique plan and purpose for each of us, and comparing ourselves to others only diminishes our ability to fulfill that purpose. Instead of longing for what others have or the experiences they enjoy, we should focus on deepening our relationship with God and seeking His guidance in all our decisions.

Pray

Lord, I recognize the growing influence of the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) in today’s society and how it has begun to impact my spiritual walk with You.
Like the foolish virgins in the parable, I am sometimes unprepared, my spiritual lamp lacking the oil needed to sustain me.
I declare, Lord, that from this day forward, my priority shall be to seek Your Kingdom above all else
Lord, grant me the wisdom to discern what truly matters and the courage to say ‘no’ to distractions that take me away from You. Let Your Holy Spirit guide me in making decisions that align with Your will. I aim to focus more on deepening my relationship with You, investing in my spiritual growth and let go the distractions that fuel my fears of missing out.
In times when I feel overwhelmed by information and social pressures, help me remember that I need not be a part of everything to experience Your fullness. You alone are sufficient for me, and in You, I lack nothing.
I declare that I am breaking free from the bonds of FOMO, confident that as I draw nearer to You, the things of this world will grow strangely dim in the light of Your glory and grace.
In Jesus’ mighty name, I declare these things. Amen.

4. Seizing Opportunities for Spiritual Advancement

The ten virgins in the parable were given the chance to meet the Bridegroom, We too have countless moments in our lives where we can quiet down and grow in God’s presence. advance spiritually. These opportunities are gifts from God, designed to help us grow closer to Him and deepen our faith.

Seizing opportunities for spiritual advancement requires intentionality and a willingness to step out of our comfort zones. It may involve taking on new responsibilities within our church communities, participating in outreach programs, or engaging in acts of service. By embracing these opportunities, we not only deepen our own faith but also inspire and encourage others on their spiritual journeys.

Last weekend I had the privilege of being in a weekend prayer retreat for women only. I believe we were close to 500 women if not more. Next month will be the men’s turn. While there, I reached out to the young men in my home, asking if they had paid for their retreat. Needless to say, none of them had paid, and one told me that he would plan to attend the men’s retreat in 2024!!! Ha!!

When I returned home, I called all of them to explain the power of seizing opportunities like this when it comes. I told them that they were going to be heads of families and that now is the time to build spiritual muscle. They have registered.

My dear Watcher, please don’t miss opportunities to build your spiritual muscle. My prayer for you is that the grace to desire prayer will rest upon you. You will pray until you become prayer. Your house shall be called a house of prayer. Amen. Needless to say they have registered.

Ephesians 5:15-17 (NIV) – “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”
Not enough for us and you –

5. The Virgins’ Cooperation and Unity
One of the lessons we can learn from the wise virgins is the power of cooperation and unity.
The parable tells us that ten virgins went out to meet the Bridegroom, five of them were foolish and unprepared, while the other five were wise and ready. The wise virgins brought extra oil for their lamps, while the foolish ones did not. When the Bridegroom finally arrived, the foolish virgins ran out of oil and had to go and buy more. In the meantime, the door was shut, and they were left outside, missing the joyous wedding feast.

The wise virgins, on the other hand, were prepared and entered the wedding feast with the Bridegroom. Their unity and cooperation were evident in their decision to bring extra oil. They understood the importance of being ready and supported one another in their preparations. This unity and cooperation were the key to their success.

Matthew 25: 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’

Five virgins agreed to have excess oil, while five virgins agreed to procrastinate and not prepare. In both cases, there was agreement and cooperation. Who are you cooperating within this journey of life?

You see in our spiritual walk and in our lives here on earth, cooperation and unity. Just like the wise virgins, we must be ready and vigilant, ensuring that we have enough spiritual oil to keep our lamps burning.
Cooperation involves working together, supporting and encouraging one another in our spiritual growth. It means being accountable to each other, praying together, and sharing our burdens. When we cooperate, we can learn from one another’s strengths and weaknesses, and together, we can become better equipped to face the challenges that lie ahead.
Unity, on the other hand, is the result of our cooperation. It is the bond that holds us together as a body of believers. When we are united, we can withstand any trial or temptation that comes our way. Our unity demonstrates our love for one another and reflects the love of Christ to the world.

6. Embracing the Holy Spirit’s Guidance

Oil in this parable symbolizes the Holy Spirit. The extra oil carried by the wise virgins represents the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in their lives. It signifies their spiritual readiness, their commitment to pursuing a close relationship with God, and their willingness to be led and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Having a vibrant, Spirit-filled prayer life is essential for our spiritual preparedness.
The foolish virgins, on the other hand, represent those who neglect their spiritual growth and fail to cultivate a deep relationship with God. They lack the extra oil, indicating a lack of the Holy Spirit’s presence in their lives. This teaches us the importance of not relying on past encounters or experiences with God but continually seeking His presence and guidance through prayer.

The Wise Virgins’ Dependence on the Holy Spirit

The wise virgins understood the need to be filled with the Holy Spirit. They knew that without His guidance, wisdom, and power, they would not be able to endure the waiting period. They recognized that their own efforts and human strength were insufficient to sustain them. Instead, they relied on the Holy Spirit to empower them, equip them, and keep their lamps burning.
As Watchers, it is important for us to recognize the significance of the Holy Spirit in our prayer lives. He helps us pray according to God’s will, intercedes for us when we don’t know how to pray, and empowers our prayers with His authority. The Holy Spirit also reveals God’s heart to us, helping us align our desires with His and teaching us to pray with faith and persistence.

Pray

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, I declare and decree that my life shall be a testament to the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Heavenly Father, I recognize that human strength and intellect are not sufficient to sustain me through life’s challenges and the periods of waiting for Your promises to manifest. Therefore, I affirm my unwavering reliance on the Holy Spirit to empower and equip me in every season.
Spirit of the Living God, You are my helper in prayer. As I cultivate a lifestyle of prayer and intercession, guide me to pray according to the perfect will of God. Be my Advocate, making intercession for me with groanings that cannot be uttered, empowering my prayers with heavenly authority.
I declare that through the power of the Holy Spirit, I will grow in my understanding of the heart of God. Align my desires with the Father’s will, teach me to pray with faith that moves mountains and with a persistence that breaks chains.
Lord, I acknowledge that to be effective Watchers over our lives, our families, and our ministries, we need the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, I decree that I will not quench the Spirit but will remain sensitive to His leading,
May my life serve as a beacon, a burning lamp fueled by the oil of the Holy Spirit, lighting the way for others to find their path to You. I trust that I will exhibit the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

The Foolish Virgins’ Ignoring of the Spirit’s Leading

One of the lessons we can learn from the foolish virgins is the danger of becoming complacent in our spiritual walk. They knew that the Bridegroom was coming, yet they did not take the necessary steps to ensure they were ready. Similarly, as believers, we can become complacent and neglect the leading of the Spirit. We may attend church, read our Bibles, and even pray, but if we are not actively seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance and following His leading, we are in danger of spiritual stagnancy.

Another lesson we can glean from the foolish virgins is the importance of being sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s promptings. The wise virgins had enough oil for their lamps because they were attentive and responsive to the leading of the Spirit. They were prepared and ready when the Bridegroom arrived. On the other hand, the foolish virgins were caught off guard and left in darkness because they failed to pay attention to the Spirit’s leading.

Pray
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, I stand against the spirit of complacency and spiritual stagnancy that threatens to infiltrate my life and the lives of my family. I declare that I am awakened, just like the wise virgins, ever vigilant and receptive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Father God, I renounce the lethargy and negligence that marked the lives of the foolish virgins. I declare that my spiritual lamps will not run dry; instead, they will be continuously fuelled by the anointing of the Holy Spirit. No longer will I be content with mere religious activities—attending church, reading the Bible, or even praying—without the invigorating power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
I decree that my spiritual senses are sharpened to discern the promptings of the Holy Spirit. I will not miss His gentle nudges, His warnings, or His directions. I choose to walk in obedience to His leading, thereby averting the darkness of spiritual stagnation and the regret of missed opportunities.
I come against every demonic force, every lie of the enemy, that seeks to make me insensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading. I break every chain, every shackle, and every barrier that hinders the free flow of the Spirit in my life. I release the fire of God to consume every chaff of complacency and to ignite a fervent passion for God’s presence and power.
I declare that I am clothed in the armour of God, fortified against the schemes of the devil. I wield the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, cutting asunder every plan of the enemy to lead me into complacency and to deafen my ears to the Holy Spirit’s instruction.
Lord, let Your Spirit flood every area of my life. May I be so filled and led by the Holy Spirit that when the Bridegroom—our Lord Jesus Christ—comes, I will be among the wise, ready and prepared, entering into the fullness of joy in Your presence.
I am vigilant; I am led by the Spirit, and I am free from the snare of complacency and neglect. Amen and Amen!

This brings us to the end of our watch, I pray that you are energized and empowered. i pray these prayers draw you closer to our Lord and King.
